PRELIMINARY investigations into the Dubai-bound Emirates plane that U-turned and was forced to land at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport when one engine caught fire suggest that the Airbus 330-200 carrying 135 passengers and 15 crew members was faulty.

According to an aviation expert, investigations carried out so far have ruled out the possibility of any foreign object or unidentified flying objects (UFO) getting into the engine.

The experts said the incident may also result in recalling similar Airbus airliners to correct the error and enhance the safety for future flights.

“The preliminary investigations have ruled out foreign objects getting into the engine because we inspected the runway and carried out other observations…on the other hand, the plane had been flying for about 30 minutes and it was at 34,000 feet [above sea level],” the experts said.

“This is a five-star airline and they [Emirates] do not compromise on quality and safety,” the expert said. “This, therefore, is certainly not human error but most likely a systems failure…a manufacturing error. This is a unique case which has never been witnessed.”

The plane took off from KK International Airport around 23:00 hours last Sunday and caught fire on the left engine, which the pilots put out using inbuilt fire extinguishers controlled from the cock-pit as fear gripped the 135 passengers on board including Stanchart managing director Mizinga Melu.

The experts said the engine was extensively damaged and required replacement after the blades snapped and ripped through the engine nacelle [engine cover or housing].

Mrs Melu, who is also Zambia Daily Mail board chairperson, was travelling to America through Dubai. She described the incident as traumatic.

A combined investigation team of Zambia Air Force and Department of Civil Aviation is currently preparing a comprehensive report, as demanded by international procedure.

The source said investigations on the engine failure of flight EK 714 have also attracted attention from the National Geographical Society, who intend to reconstruct the incident and film a documentary for the satellite National Geographical channel on aircraft investigations.

He said the report will then be submitted to an international team of investigators, which also includes Rolls Royce engine manufacturers.

And a check by Daily Mail at the airport yesterday found a team of engineers. including those who recently arrived from Dubai, overhauling the engine while big wooden boxes seemingly containing engine parts, were spotted near the grounded plane.

This report seems inacurate, the engine has no proppeller and what was seen by the reporter as an engine overhaul, was actually an engine change. The defective engine will probably be shipped as it is to facilitate full investigations.
