Posted on October 18, 2012 by Kyle Thill Really, the two objectives of a solid inventory control system are good customer service and control over the inventory investment. It might be easy to say that a “fat” or overstocked inventory is great for customer service but experience tells you that it generally means just the opposite.

When an inventory is allowed to inflate through poor purchases or perhaps a weak phase out plan, the dollars in inventory are no longer helping the customer, but rather they are choking off future better inventory investments needed to help the customer. When an inventory is run to lean, well then like we mentioned a little bit yesterday, there is often a lot of expensive emergency ordering going on.

No matter whom your dealer is maybe the most important person in the room just might be the individual that builds and places stocking orders and determines phase in and phase out. Managing inventory control [when to buy, how much to buy] and inventory management [controlling the stock and its movement] is important when you realize that parts inventory is one of the largest single investments a dealer has. Its health plays an important role in the dealership’s health and ultimately the dealership’s ability to serve its customer base.

It isn’t glamorous, and often it is dealt with less importance than many other areas, but a good staff parts people minding all aspects of inventory control have a real impact on your service experience.
