Innovation in additive manufacturing technologies, which have the potential to change the face of manufacturing across the globe, is to be boosted through £7 million of new Government investment in research and development, Universities and Science Minister David Willetts announced today (Monday 22 October).
Grants for collaborative research and development projects in additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, will be awarded through the ‘Inspiring New Design Freedoms in Additive Manufacturing competition opening on 3 December. More information about the competition will be available on the competitions area of the website here from the end of October.
The competition aims to help businesses bring components and consumer items made by additive manufacturing more quickly to market. It will also help innovative UK companies take the next steps to accelerating the adoption of additive manufacturing technologies and overcome remaining technical barriers and explore new business models.
The new competition will be managed by Technology Strategy Board, the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council.
