Lean Quality Tools
Recently, the Office of Quality Management led two NUS teams to the International Convention for Quality Control Circles 2012 (ICQCC 2012). Every year, ICQCC is organised by a different country, who will host it in world-class convention premises. ICQCC seeks to showcase the best teams from all over the world by engaging them in a competition that is assessed by a team of experienced judges.
ICQCC 2012 was held in the beautiful capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. Besides being a large-scale affair that spanned an entire floor of the sprawling Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), ICQCC 2012 was also an invaluable opportunity for us to network with diverse individuals. We not only shared knowledge, but also harvested new ideas from teams that hailed from nations as far afield as Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
The two NUS teams that competed at ICQCC 2012 were the Plant and Systems Engineering (PSE) Division from the Office of Estate and Development, and the Waterina Team from Office of Housing Services and Office of Environmental Sustainability.
Presenting on behalf of PSE Division was Mr Lee Boon Liang, who laid bare the substantial cost savings secured by his team’s initiative to improve the efficiency of lift-replacement exercises.
On the second day, Mr Lee Peng Chuan and Mr Pandurangan Purushothaman presented their project, “Water efficiency management at Prince George’s Park Residences”, at ICQCC 2012. Through simple but innovative measures, the team sought to multiply the ecological worthiness of campus living spaces by dramatically reducing the usage of water.
ICQCC 2012 closed with a poignant ceremony that saw the Malaysian organisers hand over the stewardship of the event to Taiwan. ICQCC 2013 will thus be held in Taipei, Taiwan.
On the last day of the conference, the NUS delegation had the privilege of visiting Air Asia for an industry learning visit. At the Air Asia Academy, we were delighted to discover that the budget airline had a lot in common with NUS’ approach to continual improvement. Like NUS teams, Air Asia units also actively apply Lean Six Sigma tools in their improvement projects. In fact, both projects that were presented at ICQCC 2012 had originally been Lean Six Sigma projects that followed a Define-Measure-Analyse-Improve-Control, or DMAIC, approach.
ICQCC 2012 was a success for the NUS teams that participated in it. The members of PSE Division and the Waterina returned to Singapore with renewed vigour to not only engage in more value-adding projects for the University, but also mentor their colleagues in continual improvement initiatives. Both teams have committed fresh projects to the Learning Institutions Quality Conference (LIQC), to be held in 15 November 2012.
Teams that obtain either Star or Gold awards at LIQC 2012 have the opportunity to join next year’s ICQCC, which will be hosted by Taipei, Taiwan.
